Table topping Wanderers have this week been tipped to win the League Two title - but manager Gareth Ainsworth said talk of championships is wide of the mark.

York City became the latest side this season to be vanquished by the Chairboys on Saturday as Wanderers beat them 1-0 to reach 50 points after just 25 matches.

Beaten manager Russell Wilcox said Blues are capable of staying at the top of the table, while former playing hero Keith Scott this week also spoke of his belief Wanderers can claim the title come the end of the season.

But Ainsworth has played down the suggestion his team can finish top of the pile, despite saying he's flattered by the plaudits to come his side's way this week.

And although he hasn't banned talk of promotion amongst his squad, he insisted the players hadn't been talking about it.

The Blues boss said: "It's unbelievably flattering, but I think it's crazy anyone could be saying that.

"If they could see training and see the size of the squad, they might have a second thought on that. Last Thursday before the York game I only had 12 people training.

"If people want to put their opinions out there then put them out there, but it's not something I concur with at all.

"People don't have the knowledge of the ins and outs of the club and the difficulties we face. If they did, maybe they would rethink where we might finish.

"We love this type of being up against it. Everyone seems to be thinking now we are not up against it, we are a top team that should be winning the league. I don't concur with those views."

Asked if the P word was forbidden from being mentioned, Ainsworth said: "It's not banned, but it's not something the lads chat about because they are a sensible group.

"I'm keeping my feet firmly on the floor with all the comments about us winning the league. The plan was always League Two survival - the chairman's given 55 points as the total and I want to get there first."

Blues picked up their 14th win of the campaign in seeing off York on Saturday and beaten manager Wilcox said afterwards: "You have to credit Wycombe for the win. They're up the top of the division for a reason and Ainsworth has really got them going this season. Can they stay there? On that showing I think they can."

Meanwhile legendary former Wanderers striker Scott told the Bucks Free Press this week: "I think they can win the championship, I really do. That's not just me saying that because I'm a supporter and a former player and I want them to, I really truly believe they can.

"The signings he made in the summer have been exceptional. I've seen a lot of League Two this season and Wycombe are as good as any of the sides vying for promotion.

"There's a lot of things that can happen, but based on what I've seen I think they can win the championship."
