Wanderers fan and season ticket holder Will Vince blogs about the goal-shy Blues...

Having relied on their free scoring exploits for much of the campaign the last few weeks have seen the Blues defence grab the headlines in order to keep the points total ticking over, and extend the sides unbeaten run to ten games.

After dominating proceedings but having to settle for a point at Bury, Wanderers were thanking their lucky stars that Mansfield missed many a guilt edged opportunity in a goalless draw at Field Mill on Saturday. Previously, home games against Hartlepool and York had seen the Blues create enough chances to win several games, their failure to take them has seen them hanging on in games that really should have been put out of sight.

While Aaron Holloway is proving a real find for Gareth Ainsworth I would argue whether we can afford to play with just the one striker if he’s not finding the net. Though Holloway is undoubtedly improving game by game and his terrific hold up play more than worthy of his place in the side, he has so far failed to add to his one goal so far this season.

The loss of Paul Hayes to injury certainly isn’t helping, though he himself hasn’t netted since the home game with Burton in mid November. Personally, I would like to see Matt McClure given a run of games; his miss late on at Mansfield was that of a man badly in need of game time.

After his brace at home to Southend he’s been troubled with injury, a theme which has so far curtailed his development and obvious potential.

With Wanderers only finding the net five times in the last seven games, their only scorers being the recently departed Paris Cowan Hall and loanee Fred Onyedinma, scoring is certainly starting to become a problem.

This compares to 16 goals in the previous seven games, when the Blues were comfortably putting sides to the sword.

That said, Ainsworth’s team have picked up some really good results on the road in very tricky conditions recently that speaks volumes for the character and fight that manager Gareth Ainsworth has installed in his team.

Having witnessed such a dramatic turnaround in fortunes this season and having been greatly entertained throughout its course, I feel somewhat ungrateful to have any criticism of the side at all.

Though small in size, I believe that this is one of the most talented Wycombe sides we have seen in a long time and in my opinion are rightly deserving of their current position at the summit of League Two.

The season’s points target of 55 is now just one win away for the team and it will be interesting to see whether there is a change of approach once that target is met.
