Beaconsfield SYCOB took a big step towards securing their place in Southern One Central after downing play-off chasers Barton Rovers 4-2 at Holloways Park on Saturday.

The Rams found themselves behind at the break but hit back through a penalty from Kofi Lockhart-Adams, a brace from Ollie Jones and a goal from Romaine Walker before Rovers netted a consolation late on.

Victory against Barton means Gary Meakin’s men have taken 12 points in the nine games since his return in January and it leaves them exactly 12 points above the bottom two.

“When I came in confidence was a bit low because that’s just what results do, but they’re a young bunch, they believe in themselves and that’s all we’ve tried to nurture since we’ve been here,” said the Becky boss.

“The results have actually been ok, yes we’ve got to put wins together but we’ve actually only lost three of nine. It’s always been there and it’s just about trying to put back-to-back wins together now.”

Failure to take their chances has been a recurring theme for Beaconsfield in recent weeks and the home fans had a case of déjà vu in the first 45 minutes as Jordan Ajanlekoko and Chris Henry both hit the upright in the first half.

Lockhart-Adams was introduced at the break and his entrance into the fray proved a masterstroke by Meakin as he tucked away a penalty after Victor Osubu had been upended in the box. Osubu had missed a penalty the previous week in a 1-0 loss St Ives, and clearly thought better of stepping up again. “I just told them (at half-time) to keep believing in what they’re doing because that’s been our problem lately. We’ve been playing well but not taking our chances and then getting punished by the odd chance for the opposition and almost stopped doing what we were doing,” said Meakin.

“On Saturday we were the better side first half, they broke away and scored but it didn’t mean that we had to stop doing what we were doing because it eventually it would work.

“Luckily enough we got a penalty three minutes into the second half which gave us that fight and we just kicked on from there.”

In the build-up to the game Meakin believed a win against high-flying Barton would only be a surprise to those who have not been to see Beaconsfield recently.

The club are still 19th in the league table, but their boss clearly believes it is a false position given that the majority of the side is now made up of players who took Becky to an eighth place finish last season.

Meakin takes his players to Bedford Town on Saturday as they look to continue their resurgence up the table.

He said: “We’ve got a side that isn’t a bottom three side, but we will have from now until the end of the season because of where we were before I came back in. We’re just trying to claw some points back now.

“Bedford are one of the sides that we want to try and catch, and if we were to win it’s another win that AFC Hayes have got to get from the games they have left. Even a point, four points from Barton and Bedford would be a good return.”
