Flackwell Heath’s charge for Hellenic Premier Division glory has been fuelled by the goals of two men this season.

Dan Burnell and Gavin James are responsible for 50 of the Reds’ 94 league goals and they both struck on Saturday as Heath saw off Thame United 2-0 at Wilks Park.

James struck after two minutes to take his tally for the season to 28 before Burnell chalked up his 20th of the campaign just before the half hour mark.

Flackwell boss Graham Malcolm said: “They’re both playing very well at the minute. People say they’re the difference – well, I suppose at the top end of the pitch you need to have a difference, and we don’t have one we have two.

“But you can’t take away the fact that it’s another clean sheet – two in a row. The foundations are laid at the back and it gives those guys the opportunities to score the goals and get the glory.”

The strike duo’s tremendous haul has contributed to Heath accumulating 13 more goals than anyone else in the league, with the team’s defence, which has conceded the least amount of goals, also deserving of credit for their lofty league position.

With eight league fixtures remaining Malcom’s men are a single point behind leaders Highmoor Ibis with five games in hand, and the Flackwell manager is confident his deadly duo can fire them to the title.

“When you look at the league we’ve got the second and third highest goal scorers, and potentially we could end up with the first and second which would be the main reason why we are where we are,” said Malcolm.

“They don’t work together, as such, because Gav is very high up the pitch and almost on his own and Danny gets around him. Danny sets him up quite a bit as well.

“It’s a unique partnership in as much that they don’t play up front together side-by-side. I’m very pleased with them, but more importantly I’m just pleased with another clean sheet and another win. Thirty games reached and we just have to get this done now. I think four wins out of eight will do it for us.”

Ashleigh James will miss Saturday’s trip to Bracknell Town, as Flackwell look to go top of the league, after the defender was sent-off just after half-time against Thame.

Malcolm’s men have played and beaten Bracknell three times already this season but the Heath boss is wary of facing a team who count the league’s top goal scorer, Shane Cooper Clark, among their ranks.

He said: “They’re a good side. Unfortunately he (Cooper-Clark) couldn’t play for them on Saturday, hence why they drew. We don’t have a great record over there so it’s definitely a banana skin, but we go over there as we’re expected to go: to try and win the game.

“We have a full strength side bar one player (Ashleigh James). There’s no reason why we shouldn’t go over there and win the game.

“If we do win we could go top of the league which will be the first time since August so that’s what I’ll be saying to them on Saturday.”
