Risborough are tantalisingly close to winning the Berks/Bucks & Oxon Championship title after they broke their duck against Harwell with a 15-8 win on Saturday.

Nick Kidby’s team had not beaten their hosts away from home in two seasons (three meetings) but finally secured a win thanks to tries from Damien Brown and Ash Rattray and five points from the boot of Rowan Packer.

Victory in their penultimate match of the season leaves them needing a bonus point win against Aldermaston in their final fixture tomorrow to make sure of the title and a return to the Premier division.

Saturday’s match couldn’t have started any better for the visitors who were ahead with just a minute on the clock as captain Brown evaded the home defence to score a superb individual try under the posts.

Unfortunately Packer stepped up and placed his conversion attempt wide of the posts to leave the score at 5-0.

The winger redeemed himself after 24 minutes as he responded to a Harwell penalty with one of his own as the first half ended with Risborough leading 8-3.

After the interval another fast start led to Rattray driving over the line with five minutes played in the second half, Packer was on target again to push the lead out to 15-3.

Harwell are third in the table and they forced their way back into contention with an unconverted try after 67 minutes, but they couldn’t breach Risborough’s line again as Kidby’s team stay one point clear at the top.
