Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth says the club will continue to utilise the loan market after the “vital” contribution which has been made by those who Wycombe have borrowed this season.

The deadline for loan signings in the Football League passed last night with the Blues boss having stated on Thursday that he was happy with the squad at his disposal.

Seven players have arrived at Adams Park on a temporary basis this season, four of which featured, and two of whom scored, in the victory against Luton on Tuesday night.

Wycombe’s coaching staff have taken the plaudits for blooding youngsters such as Alfie Mawson and Fred Onyedinma, who have gone on to become key players in the club’s push for promotion, and Ainsworth says it’s something the club will continue to do.

He said: “Alfie’s defending has been outstanding, Fred’s goals, Nico Yennaris and Sam Saunders have come in at the right time when we needed it and Danny Rowe, although limited opportunities, has absolutely excelled when he’s come in.

“He’s been unlucky not keep his place but the two centre halves have played out of their skins this season. It’s a real big thing for us to use the loan market in the right way and I’m sure it’s not the last season we’ll be doing this.”

Wanderers have formed a particularly strong relationship with Championship side Brentford this season who have lent them Mawson, Courtney Senior, Sam Saunders and Nico Yennaris over the course of the campaign.

The latter two were tied down until the end of the season by Ainsworth on Monday after discussions with Mark Warburton (Brentford manager), although the Bees retain a 24-hour recall clause on the pair, and the Blues boss is keen to keep building relationships with clubs higher up the league ladder.

“You want to be the best and having relationships with some of the best clubs in the country is really important,” he said.

“It gives you focus as a manager to see what they do, and to be able to work with players who’ve played at a higher level is excellent for my learning and my management career.

“Also I’m sure that the players have seen something different coming here. They strive to be at a higher level and hopefully that’s with Wycombe Wanderers.”

While Wanderers are gaining a reputation for helping promising youngsters make the step up to league football, Ainsworth says he will never take a player on loan just for the sake of it.

He said: “I would never bring a player in just to get games they have to be the right player. They’ve got to be the right character too and that’s important.

“It’s not like you’re forced to take players and hopefully I’ll never be forced to take someone and have to play someone because I don’t think that’s the right way for a manager to be.

“I’m really pleased and really glad that Mark Warburton and Steve Evans at Rotherham have been great. We’ve got great relationships with both of them and they’ve helped me no end.”
