Sam Saunders says Wycombe’s last gasp win against Exeter on Tuesday night would have hit promotion rivals Bury hard.

The Shakers beat second place Shrewsbury on the same evening and their game had long since ended before Paul Hayes scored a 102nd minute winner at Adams Park.

Had Wanderers drawn against Paul Tisdale’s team they would have been only two points ahead of fourth place Bury, who still have a game in hand on the Blues.

“It’s got to kill Bury because they must have been in the dressing room thinking we’d drawn and then 90+12 they must be thinking ‘Jesus these boys never give up’,” said Saunders.

“That’s the attitude we’ve got for the last three games. We’ll never give up, we’ll keep going to the end and if Bury want to get promoted they’ve got to win all four and we’ve got to slip up.”

The midfielder, who is on loan from Brentford, scored his second goal for the club to give Wycombe the lead on Tuesday night and his performance earned him the man-of-the-match award.

Saunders opted to come and play regular football in League Two rather than stay in the Championship with the Bees, where his chances to impress would have been harder to come by.

He said: “I’d have probably been on the bench tonight at Brentford waiting for an opportunity, so it was nice to play my tenth game here.

“I’m very tired but it’s good to have that feeling because I haven’t had it for a long time. It’s great to get that buzz back. I’m not going to sleep tonight now but it was fantastic and it just epitomises what this team is all about.

“We got battered second half. We admit it and they were the better side, but we didn’t give up and that’s something that’s instilled within the whole squad. Character, togetherness, never giving up and we never give up.”
