Will Vince blogs about the dramatic events of Tuesday night as Wanderers inch towards promotion from League Two...

Wycombe fans will have walked away from Adams Park on Tuesday night immensely proud of the performance their side had produced on the pitch.

If ever there was a night for bravery, guts and determination this was it, and Gareth Ainsworth’s men certainly didn’t disappoint.

After a hard fought victory over Cheltenham Town at the weekend fans will have been worried that their weary players might be running on near empty.

Their fears looked to have materialised as Exeter dominated the Blues in the second half until the Chairboy’s unearthed an extra gear out of nowhere to get the crucial victory.

Former player Mark ‘Ted’ Rogers had travelled over from his native Canada for the game and the performances of the current heroes in blue were a timely throwback to some of the performances he put in when he was a Wanderer.

Rogers bravely struggled on in an F.A Cup fifth round tie with Wimbledon after boss Lawrie Sanchez had used all his substitutes. The likes of Nico Yennaris and Alfie Mawson repeated that feat on Tuesday night when they were clearly hampered by their respective injuries.

Wycombe’s injury list seems to be growing by the game as they fight tooth and nail for precious points, it’s no surprise to see Ainsworth seriously considering chucking himself on the bench in the not too distant future.

He will surely be hoping he and his staff can get a turn in fortunes regarding injuries but with so many players having played 40 plus games, it’s no surprise that bodies are struggling.

Although Wanderers have been far from their best in the last couple of games they have still got the results that they have been looking for. Paul Hayes and Sam Saunders are pivotal if this trend is to carry on, it’s almost embarrassing seeing these two slog it out in League Two week in, week out as their abilities are surely worthy of higher echelons.

The last three games are probably not going to be an easy watch, but under Gareth Ainsworth Wycombe fans can be assured that every stone will be turned over in order to try and find the formula’s to get Wycombe Wanderers over the line.
