Alfie Mawson has been labelled “outstanding” by Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth in the wake of the defenders was nomination for the League Two Player of the Year award.

The defender, who has also scored five goals this campaign, is up against Bury’s Danny Mayor and Shrewsbury’s Ryan Woods for the accolade which will be presented at the Football League Awards in London on Sunday evening.

The 21-year-old has become a fans’ favourite at Adams Park after excelling at the heart of Wanderers’ backline alongside Aaron Pierre.

Mawson arrived at the club on loan from Championship side Brentford just 24 hours before the start of the season and has since contributed to 14 clean sheets as Wycombe have climbed to third in the table.

Ainsworth said: “It’s absolutely fantastic for him; what an honour.

“I think he’s got a real chance of winning it, he’s been outstanding this year and for a young man, who hadn’t played in the Football League until he came to this team and kicked a ball with us 24 hours before our first game, it’s brilliant for him.

“I’m so pleased for him because he’s a real level headed young man who has got a lot of talent and I’m just pleased he’s had the season he has at Wycombe Wanderers because he’s been crucial to what we’ve done this season.”
