Chesham Stags' second team were celebrating a league and cup double on Saturday after a 24-10 victory against Southgate.

A four try display was enough to ensure the Merit Table 6 Cup ended up in their trophy cabinet alongside the Merit Table 6 league title.

The Stags, led by England womens World Cup winners Rocky Clark and Kat Merchant, recovered from the conceding an early try to storm into a 14-7 lead at the break thanks to two scores from James Leek, both of which were converted by scrum-half Toby Deane. Deane then went over the try line himself as he scored after picking the ball up from 70 metres out, although he was off target with his conversion attempt.

A penalty from Southgate cut Chesham’s lead to 19-10 but there was to be no comeback as replacement prop Archie Shirley-Bevan dotted down the fourth and final try.

“The league and cup double, combined with back to back championships, is the culmination of four years hard work under the direction of Rocky Clark and Kat Merchant,” said captain Andy Deane.

“This squad has a terrific team spirit and that shows in the way that we completed this historical double. There were some outstanding individual performances against a tough opposition.

“Special mention from me goes to prop James Leek for two terrific tries, Archie Shirley-Beavan for a debut try in such an important game and Toby Deane for a man-of-the-match and outstanding individual score. But this achievement is down to the whole squad of players who have turned out for the seconds this year, and not just the 19 who played at the weekend.”
