Gareth Ainsworth expects to have “one or two” players back from injury for Wanderers’ final game of the season against Northampton tomorrow.

Sido Jombati is definitely out while doubts hang over the fitness of Matt McClure, Joe Jacobson and Sam Saunders, who pulled out of the starting XI against Morecambe on Saturday after injuring himself in the warm-up.

The Blues boss wouldn’t reveal who is likely to return but did say he would take “no risks” with his team selection, which may include Aaron Pierre after he served his one match suspension.

Northampton stand in Wanderers’ way at Sixfields, and Ainsworth couldn’t help but notice the comparisons between last season when Blues needed an away win and two results to go their way on the final day to stay up.

“It’s irony because we could go up on goal difference with winning a game and relying on two results. It’s an unbelievable comparison to last year,” he said.

“We were relying on two results and we stayed up on goal difference, so you can’t help but notice that. If anyone tells me they thought that would happen they’re telling me a lie. People probably thought we’d finish mid-table and that would have been a successful season.”

Before the club’s final day win against Torquay last campaign Ainsworth told his players they could affect games elsewhere with an early goal and he believes that rings true again on Saturday.

He said: “The rest of the division is sorted and there’s only one place in League Two that people don’t know who is going to get yet.

“In League Two there’s only three games that people are concentrating on, so if we can get an early goal that will filter around all the grounds, including the ones that matter at Tranmere and Morecambe.

“An early goal is crucial. Any goal is crucial but an early one – I’d take one in the 90th minute but I’d definitely have one in the first and see what that does to other teams.”
