With just two days to go until Wanderers take on Southend in the League Two play-off final we asked Southend Echo journalist Chris Phillips what Wanderers can expect from the Shrimpers at Wembley...

What’s the mood like amongst the Southend camp after beating Stevenage to make it to the final?

“It’s really good, like you would expect. Southend were on top for most of the tie against Stevenage but they wasted a number of clear cut chances and it seemed as though it was going to be one of those nights.

“But, in the end, they scored twice in the second half of extra time to get the win and everyone has been on a huge high since then because of how exciting that game was. As well as that, it means promotion is still possible which was the aim at the start of the season.”

Who are the dangermen that Wycombe need to be wary of?

“Barry Corr has scored more goals against Wycombe than any other team in his career so I’m sure he will be confident this weekend. He had a really frustrating night against Stevenage in the second leg of the semi-final and he will want to make up for that. Being honest, I don’t think Southend really have dangermen as such.

“Their success has been down to them being very energetic, solid and hard-working. Daniel Bentley is a great goalkeeper, Ben Coker is probably the best left-back at this level plus Michael Timlin and David Worrall are both really good players but it’s all done within the structure of the team.”

What sort of tactics do you think Phil Brown will employ at Wembley?

“He encourages them to play passing football so I’m sure that won’t change on Saturday. I would expect them to play 4-4-2 as well.”

What’s been the secret to Southend’s success this season?

“Not letting in many goals. Daniel Bentley went six months without conceding a goal at Roots Hall and the defensive record has been really good again this season. The team is also very well organised, really hard-working and full of energy.

“Not scoring enough goals stopped them getting automatic promotion in the end but there can’t be too many teams who work quite as hard as Southend do during matches.”
