Tyrrell Hatton has qualified for next month’s Open Championship after a top ten finish at the Irish Open.

Three spots were up for grabs to be amongst the field at the prestigious tournament and Hatton secured his place alongside tournament winner Soren Kjeldsen and Eddie Pepperall, who finished runner-up.

The 23-year-old, who is a former pupil at Great Marlow School, carded a final round 74 to finish tied fourth at one under par.

Spaniard Rafael Cabrera-Bello would have taken Hatton’s spot had he not bogeyed the 18th, leaving him tied with Hatton, although the Harleyford Golf Club member took the final qualification spot courtesy of a higher world ranking.

Hatton, who is in his second year on the European Tour, got off to an excellent start at the Royal County Down Golf Club, picking up a birdie on the par five first before a bogey on eight left him level par through the first nine.

Three more dropped shots and one birdie on the back nine left the Marlow man two over after 18 holes.

The second round saw Hatton make his move as he cut through the field with a five under round of 66, including one eagle and six birdies.

A solid third round kept the Bucks golfer in contention at the top of the leader board after he carded a round of one under.

A day of struggle ensued for Hatton as well as many others on Sunday as windy conditions saw him card five bogeys in his final round and he walked back into the club house at three over for the day.
