BLUES boss Gareth Ainsworth blasted his side’s uncharacteristic sloppy defending as they twice conceded from set plays in this afternoon’s 2-1 defeat at home to Plymouth Argyle.

The unusual errors cost Wanderers their unbeaten record this season and saw the Devonians leapfrog them in the table.

Wycombe conceded the first goal to former Adams Park loanee Reuben Reid from a corner and the second came when they failed to clear a free kick allowing Jake Jervis to score - even though he did not know much about when the ball ricocheted off him as he lay on the turf.

In between, Jason Banton, had equalised for Wanderers against his old club but Wycombe could not force a second equaliser and had to taste defeat for the first time this season.

Ainsworth said: “It’s disappointing the way we conceded the two goals. Set plays are something we pride ourselves on but if you don’t defend your set plays you are asking for trouble. They were two easy goals and we gave them away rather than them earning them.

“I felt we were the better side on the ball in general play and I thought we created many more chances but they just eluded the goal today. I think we hit the post three times today. It goes that way but it goes the other way too and I’ll be looking forward to when it does.

“Everyone knows we play a high energy game and Plymouth came to match that. There was a lack of quality in our play in some areas today which we haven’t seen but I can’t grumble. In the games we’ve played its been apparent that we have got some good players and some good quality in the team, it just deserted us at times today and it didn’t drop for us in the right areas but you have got to make your own luck and it that final third we just want to get a little better at defending set plays.

“We’ve still had a great start to the season, you only have to look at the league table to see that.”
