STRIKER Gozie Ugwu has already scored for Northampton Town this season – tomorrow he will be trying to find the net against them.

Ugwu was on trial at Sixfields in the summer and made a stunning first impression, scoring after just four minutes of their first friendly of the summer during The Cobblers’ tour of Sussex.

But the dream start to his trial turned sour just minutes later when he pulled his hamstring, ending his period with the club before it really got started.

He said: “I was out for six or seven weeks. It was a real downer for me to get injured at such a crucial time.

“It ruined my chances of getting a contract there. They had to let me go and get someone else in and I understand that.

“I was disappointed at the time because it was a good set-up but when I look back it was a blessing in disguise.

“I’ve come to Wycombe which is a great club with a great atmosphere and it is great to be sitting top of the league.”

Ugwu is now hoping to score his first ‘proper’ goal for the league leaders in tomorrow’s Adams Park clash against The Cobblers.

He has one goal, against Leyton Orient, to his name already. That was given to him by the dubious goals panel, after he’d given it up in his head to Matt Bloomfield.

He said: “At first I thought it was mine, then I saw Blooms wheel away in celebration so I thought it was his goal.

“It would be nice for me to get my first proper goal on Saturday, one where everyone can see that it is mine.”

Ugwu was at the centre of another huge talking point in midweek when he was clattered by Cambridge keeper Chris Dunn, who was sent off, as both chased a long ball.

The clash left Ugwu feeling bruised but he says the ice baths he has been having should ensure he is ready to line up against Northampton.
