Amersham & Chiltern Rugby coach Richie Williams says it would be a massive boost if the club could go top of the London One North table by Christmas.

Amersham currently sit second behind league leaders Brentwood by two points but a run of five league wins in a row has reinforced Williams’ belief his side can usurp them as league leaders.

Chiltern play their top of the table rivals on Saturday, 5 December and Williams is focusing on making sure his side is within touching distance of Brentwood when they do meet.

“It would be massive for us to go into Christmas on top of the league, but we have two tough games before we can start to think about playing Brentwood,” he said.

“We have started to build a little bit of momentum and play a bit more consistently which I have been very pleased about.”

Those two tough games come against Ruislip on Saturday and then in the form of a top four clash against Old Priorians a week later.

While he is largely focusing on his own side’s matches it has not escaped Williams’ attention that Brentwood will themselves face a stern examination over the weekend.

They travel to fifth place Tring, and although Williams appreciates the quality of a side which has lost just once this season he also called into question how they may cope against better opposition.

“Tring will be a tough game for them and with all due respect I think they play some of the bigger teams over the next few weeks and we will see where they are a bit more after that,” he explained.

“They lost their first game of the season against CS 1863, who came down a division with us, and the Tring game will be a similar challenge for them.

“I think we will start to see how the season will pan out once we get through Christmas and everyone has played each other.”

After relegation from the National League Three last year Amersham set the target of an immediate return to the division at the end of this campaign.

However, a hit and miss start to the league saw them win two and lose two of their opening four matches.

This shaky start has made Williams even more pleased with his side’s current form which was again on show as they cruised to a 40-26 victory over North Walsham on Saturday.

Walsham had won their last three league matches on the bounce heading into the tie but were no match for free-scoring Amersham.

Williams explained: “I’m very pleased with the upturn in form, we got relegated last season and at the start of the year promotion was our aim so the start wasn’t ideal.

“We have assembled a squad that is capable of getting promotion and despite the slow start we are playing a lot better now.

“We are pretty strong at the moment and we will continue to focus on ourselves and try to enforce our game on other teams which will give us a good chance to win more games.”

On a hugely positive note Williams may soon be able to welcome back two long-term absentees to his squad to help with the assault on the summit of the division.

Back row forward Tom Blackburn who has been out with a shoulder injury since October last year has started taking part in tackling drills in training.

Garrett Cann has been out for almost as long after damaging the cartilage in his knee last November and will be in contention to feature in the New Year.
