On loan centre-back Jason McCarthy believes referee Phil Gibbs had a poor game during Wycombe’s 1-1 draw with AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

The 20-year-old, who is on loan from Southampton, felt there was a clear foul on goalkeeper Matt Ingram in the build up to Wimbledon’s late equaliser.

He argued that it was one of a number of wrong decisions from the referee on a day where tempers were never far from boiling point.

“It was definitely a foul on Matt form my view and I think from everyone’s view in the stadium,” he said.

“I think not being able to get the three points was a bit out of our control tonight and I think the referee wasn’t the best and that we paid for that really.

“You get poor decisions sometimes and hopefully they will weigh themselves out as the season goes on.”

That levelling out that McCarthy hopes to get later in the season did perhaps come just moments after the goal had been scored as Wimbledon were denied a penalty.

The home side had a strong case as a grappling Aaron Pierre appeared to pull down his man on the edge of the box.

There was a sense of justice in that both sides will have felt hard done by in the space of a few minutes.

McCarthy is now readying himself for his first ever Christmas period in senior football and will be hoping for better luck in a hectic spell for the club.

He has adapted to life in senior football well and with Wanderers’ small squad will without doubt continue to get extended game time in December.

While McCarthy is looking forward to the festive matches he accepts that he will face a challenge to deal with the physical demands of playing so regularly.

“It is going to be a really busy period for me and I haven’t experienced anything like it before,” he explained.

“I am really looking forward to getting more minutes under my belt and the physical side of it will be a real test but I am really looking forward to it.”
