Wycombe Wanderers are appealing against the red card awarded to Matt Ingram during Saturday’s 2-0 loss against Morecambe.

The Blues’ keeper was dismissed late on after bringing down Aaron Wildig in the area, and will subsequently miss the FA Cup match against Aston Villa.

However, Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth feels the club have grounds to appeal the decision and is hoping Ingram will be handed a reprieve.

“I’ve seen the incident replayed, we have slowed it right down and Matt touches the ball. In my opinion the ball deviates,” Ainsworth claimed.

“I think there will possibly be an appeal going in for him because he says he touched the ball and the footage backs that up. If he has touched the ball it’s not a red card and hopefully people will see sense.

“I think the appeal is well worth putting in, and if we can put the evidence together quickly enough hopefully he will be fine to play against Villa.”

The decision compounded a poor performance from the home side as they struggled to maintain possession and made a number of mistakes.

Jason McCarthy took on goalkeeping duties as the Blues had used all their subs but couldn't prevent Morecambe from scoring.

Alex Lynch, who has made just one competitive appearance this season, will be likely to deputise for Ingram against Villa should any appeal fail.

The 20-year-old is no stranger to being forced into action after an injury to Ingram led to him starting last season’s play-off final. Ainsworth is therefore confident in the youngster’s ability.

He said: “He only plays in the big games. He is more than capable and I think that when we played Leeds here a couple of weeks back people saw that Alex is a great understudy.

“It is just that he is understudy to one of the brightest young keepers in the bottom leagues, but he will get his turn.”
