Wycombe athlete Pippa Woolven produced an expertly timed run to help Birmingham University to victory in the BUCS Cross Country Championships in Gloucester on Saturday.

Woolven ran superbly throughout the day and was one of three top 10 finishers for Birmingham as the University won three of the four titles available at the event.

With a track record that features a turn in the 3,000 metre steeplechase at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, it came as little surprise that the Wycombe Phoenix runner performed so strongly.

The standout moment of her run came in the dying stages as she executed a perfectly timed coups on race leader, and team-mate, Rebecca Murray to take first place.

Murray had led until for 20 minutes of the 21 minute race but could not respond to Woolven’s power late on in proceedings. Bath’s Jennifer Nesbitt had pushed Woolven hard earlier in the race but eventually came in third.

Woolven’s dominant display has led her to further success this week as she was selected for the Great Britain Cross Country team.

The call-up will see her head to Cassino, Italy, to compete at the FISU World University Cross Country Championships on Saturday, 12 March.

The tournament will serve as further preparation for Woolven as she attempts to qualify for the 3K steeplechase at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
