Amersham & Chiltern moved to within one bonus point win of promotion from the London One North Division after they hammered Letchworth Garden City 61-17.

Chiltern bossed the match from start to finish and took just 18 minutes to rack up the four tries needed to claim a bonus point victory on Saturday.

In fact, they were ahead almost straight from the kick-off as Dave Francis went over in the corner. Things got worse straight from the restart for Letchworth as Chiltern reclaimed the ball and set up Matt Mountford for a second quick-fire score.

A typically incisive break from Joe Butler brought the third try and Aaron Doyle claimed a fourth moments later.

Further efforts from Tom Blackburn, Sam Portland and Dave Francis made it 35-0 before Letchworth got one back at the end of an exhilarating half of rugby, which had seen seven unconverted Chiltern tries.

Chiltern’s profligacy with the boot hardly mattered though, and the second half produced a similarly one-sided affair.

Butler, Portland and Blackburn all added second tries to their individual collections and Phillip Blake also got in on the act with a brilliant burst of pace to score Chiltern’s eleventh and final try.

Credit has to go to Letchworth for their refusal to give in and they were rewarded with two late tries.

Chiltern remain one point ahead of Tring who won 81-7 against Chingford, and remain in control of the title race ahead of an away match against Barking in the final game of the season on Saturday.

The emotions could not have been more contrasting for High Wycombe on Saturday as they were humbled 71-0 against Towcestrians.

The league leaders were rampant from the outset and Wycombe failed to get near them as they suffered their biggest defeat of the season.

Wycombe head into their final game of their league campaign with a five point cushion between themselves and the South West One East relegation zone.

They face fifth placed Maidenhead in a repeat of their opening match of the league campaign which saw them suffer a narrow 22-17 defeat.

In the Southern Counties North, Beaconsfield ended a run of three defeats in a row as they overcame Thatcham 36-23.

Beaconsfield are currently in mid-table and have little left to play for going into their season curtain call against bottom-of-the-table Swindon College Old Boys.

Swindon have won only once in their last five games and Beaconsfield will be confident of finishing their season on a positive note against a team they beat 14-5 earlier in the campaign.

In the same division, Marlow made it three defeats from four for Bucks’ sides as they lost 34-19 against Buckingham.

The defeat was Marlow’s third in their last five matches and they find themselves sitting eighth going into their final game of the season.

Much like Beaconsfield, they have little to play for but will fancy their chances of picking up a win against a Drifters side they beat 39-7 earlier in the season.
