Wycombe Phoenix Harriers celebrated across the board as their seniors tied first place at the Southern Athletics League Match in Uxbridge.

The Club’s junior teams also put in commendable performances over the course of the weekend.

The senior team could not have asked for a better start to their track and field season as they managed to fight off competition from a far more experienced Portsmouth side, and tied first place with Hillingdon.

“I could not be prouder of my young team,” team manager David Randall said.

“The average age of this team is 17 and they held their own against much more experienced teams – even including international runners.”

They were taking part in the Club Championship and Invitational as hosts in Little Marlow, with 200 athletes competing.

The club’s success saw 62 of its members from the juniors and seniors pick up personal best results in their events.

These included Aaron Phillips (200m), Finn Kerr (800m) and Rollo Parry (1500m) from the U13 boys.

Josie Empringham (75m, 150m) from the U15 girls and Michael Hall (100m, 200m) were also impressive, while Domininc Symonds (100m, 300m) and Toby Folkes (100m) from the U15 boys produced top rate displays. Fraser Kilsby (15) and Ana Montgomery (14) who performed superbly in the 100/javelin and 1500m respectively were also particular standouts.

Clara Croome (200/400), Kieran Gilfedder and David Clark (5000m), Josh Parry (long jump) and Louis Simmons (shotput, discuss & hammer) all achieved a personal best.

A great overall day of success was summed up by wins from Josh Parry (100m), Jordan Layne (B200m), Mark Booth (800) and David Clark (B800m and B5000m).

The men’s 4x400 relay concluded the day, with Wycombe beating Portsmouth thanks to Jordan Layne securing a victory by 0.3 seconds.
