There was nothing to separate High Wycombe and Henley in the Home Counties Premier League on Saturday as they played out an entertaining draw.

With the sides coming into the game hot on the heels of League leaders Banbury, it was always likely to be an evenly contested match.

Henley batted first and proved to be a difficult nut to crack as Matthew Rowe (64), Michael Roberts (66) and Richard Morris (84) led Henley to 212-4.

The trio’s scores accounted for all but 44 of their side’s runs and the remainder of the Henley batting order failed to shine.

Only Ziafat Ashraf made it to 20 of those left at the crease as Wycombe tried in vain to exert some pressure on their Division One title rivals.

The Wycombe bowlers toiled with little reward as Jonathan Burden (2-36), Uzair Amjaid (2-63), Cameron Parson (1-59) and Conner Haddow (1-70) all claimed wickets.

The hosts closed on an imposing 258-6 and Wycombe were now chasing the game. Once again their hopes would largely hinge on the work of opener Garth Davson who crashed an unbeaten 103.

Davson lacked any real support as he made his way towards his fifth century of the summer and Wycombe’s inability to create a strong partnership ultimately cost them.

Captain Nathan Hawkes was the next highest scorer with 26 but other than him and John Stevens (17) no Wycombe man made it into double figures.

A resolute, unbeaten stand of two off 35 balls from David Cranfield-Thompson helped maintain calm in the Wycombe ranks and they closed their innings on 167-5.

Much like their opponents Henley shared the wicket taking duties as Gurveer Singh (2-42), Tom Nugent (2-55) and Euan Woods (1-17) all pitched in.

A home match against bottom side Reading gives Wycombe the perfect chance to return to winning ways on Saturday.
