Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth was pleased with his side’s performance in their 1-1 draw with Brentford at Adams Park.

The Chairboys fought back through Dayle Southwell’s 77th minute header after John Egan fired the Bees ahead five minutes before half-time.

Wanderers matched the Championship side for much of the match and Ainsworth was happy with his players’ efforts.

“I thought the boys worked extremely hard. There were a lot of changes during the game, but I am really pleased with the performance and as always the fitness,” he said.

“We got a result I thought we deserved. We matched Brentford many times first half and quite a few times in the second as well.”

Southwell’s goal was the ideal way to mark his first game at Adams Park as he showed a finisher’s instinct to head home Paris Cowan-Hall’s cross from close range.

The 22-year-old arrived from Boston United with a reputation for goalscoring and Ainsworth was delighted to see him register.

He explained: “Dayle has opened his account which is fantastic. He has come here to score goals and he has scored a goal for me and that is great.”

Ainsworth also opted to use a number of trialists in the match as he continues to build his squad ahead of the new season.

While he refused to elaborate on which players impressed him, he did praise the squad as a whole for adapting well to a raft of different tactics played throughout the match.

He said: “It is early days and it is only our second game, our first official pre-season game in this country.

“It was about the fans enjoying it, seeing a few changes and seeing a few boys adapt to the way we play and what we do.

“There were a lot of boys out there tonight who don’t know exactly what it is we do and what it takes to be in this team. We have to cast our eye over them and make decisions on a few of them.”
