With just over a fortnight until the League Two season commences, Wycombe Wanderers undoubtedly still have work to do in the transfer market.

The signings of Adebayo Akinfenwa, Dayle Southwell and Myles Weston plus the addition of Paris Cowan-Hall on loan have been welcome, but Wanderers’ squad remains thin on the ground.

Gareth Ainsworth still needs to find at least one goalkeeper and would ideally like to add to the 16 names on the club’s books before August 6.

The Wycombe boss remains calm about the situation though, and feels the club may do its best business later in the transfer window.

He said: “There are irons in the fire elsewhere. There are players that I believe will become available in August.

“Obviously we will have to get some in before the start of the season, I am talking about the keepers, but players will become available sort of mid-August or the end of August.

“Some good players may become available for loan, which you don’t want to miss out on, but then again you don’t want to miss out [altogether]. It is a big game of poker and I am getting better at it each year.”

Changes to the loan rules mean emergency loans have been consigned to the history books and any short-term deals will have to be concluded within the transfer window.

While Ainsworth accepts the changes present challenges for clubs at the lower echelons of the Football League, he says more players may become available as a result.

He hopes to take advantage of the situation and use any potential loan signings to maintain the positive atmosphere which has been fostered early in pre-season.

“I think there will be a rush at the end of August, more of a rush than usual,” Ainsworth explained.

“Players will want to get out if they know they are not going to play at their parent clubs and they’ll want to play at loan clubs.

“It is going to be testing this season for the lower clubs, especially with this loan window. I am really pleased though, really positive we can go into every game and win this season.”

Ainsworth, of course, still has decisions to make on a number of trialists ahead of making any potential late summer signings.

A host of unsigned players appeared in Tuesday’s pre-season friendly draw with Brentford and contributed as the Blues fought back from a goal down.

The Wycombe manager was impressed with what he saw but coy on revealing any plans to sign any of the players.

“They [the trialists] are training with us as well, so you see a lot in training. It is difficult to judge everything in a week’s training and a game,” he said.

“You don’t get to see their attitude when things go down and they are giving their absolute best. It is a tough job, but it is very nice when they play like they did tonight.

“I thought they all played some part and did themselves some justice. I am keeping my cards close to my chest, as always, but I am quietly impressed with what I saw.”
