Gareth Ainsworth believes the injuries sustained by Aaron Pierre and Paris Cowan-Hall in the 0-0 draw against QPR are not severe.

Pierre left the field after 30 minutes with a knee injury which he tried to play on with twice after being involved in a heavy challenge.

It was similar story for Cowan-Hall, who has had a bad recent history with injuries, and was substituted early in the second half.

Ainsworth though says both were contact injuries and the players stand a decent chance of recovering quickly.

He said: “It was a whack [on Pierre]. Whacks aren’t usually too serious. It was an impact and the only thing I can tell you is he is icing it.

“He tried to carry on which again is probably a decent sign that it wasn’t too bad, it wasn’t a stretcher job.

“He is a big player for us and we will make sure he is right for when we need him. Paris as well was another one who came off as more of a precaution, and we don’t want to take chances on players.”

With safety first in mind it was a surprise to see Pierre play on despite twice calling for assistance from the Wanderers physio.

Ainsworth insisted no risk was taken in allowing the centre-back to test the injury before making to call to replace him with a trialist.

Ainsworth said: “He kept saying five minutes it’s a dead leg. A dead leg is usually something you can either play on with or if it tightens up too much you are going to come off.

“It was a tough one for Aaron and Cian (O’Doherty physio) took the decision to get him off.

“We are pleased with the pre-season with everyone and if he has to have a couple of days off then so be it, but we will make sure he is alright for the big games.”
