Katherine Grainger secured safe passage to the women’s double scull rowing final at the Rio 2016 Olympics with a second place finish in her semi-final.

The Marlow Rowing Club member clocked a time of 6.52.47 alongside Vicky Thornely as they came in behind Poland’s Magdalena Fularczyk and Natalia Madaj.

Grainger will now prepare for the final which takes place on Thursday, where she will hope to defend the gold medal she won at London 2012.

Should she do so, she will move ahead of Rebecca Adlington as Britain’s most successful ever female Olympian.

The 40-year-old Scot will have to overcome boats from Poland, Greece, Lithuania, the United States and France to do so.
