Ballinger Waggoners’ under-12s tested themselves against potential international cricketers of the future as they entertained Zimbabwe.

The match was the first of a three game tour of the area for some of Zimbabwe’s most talented young cricketers and saw Ballinger hold their own in a narrow defeat.

Waggoners bowled first and were put to work by the tourists, who all train with the Howzat Academy, as they made 126 from their 20 overs.

Emmanuel Bawa was particularly impressive and hit two huge sixes on his way to a hefty score, while Brad Storrer, Conor Grant and Takura Jakachira also shone.

The Ballinger bowlers maintained great discipline throughout their opponent’s innings thanks to excellent displays from Oliver Webb, Kuran Biring, Raphi Wetherill, Finn Henry and Max Conway.

Webb and Edward Batchelor made a good start to the Waggoners’ response before some sharp fielding resulted in a run out and stumping to put Zimbabwe on top.

Weatherill then retired on 32 as some solid batting from the home side gave them a sniff of victory. It wasn’t to be though and Zimbabwe held on for a win.

Their tour continues with a match against Hertfordshire before they take on Buckinghamshire in their final game.
