Anthony Stewart’s last gasp strike gave Wycombe Wanderers their first win of the season as they beat Grimsby Town 2-1 at Adams Park.

Sido Jombati’s stunning free kick gave the Blues the lead after 55th minutes before Andrew Boyce pulled Grimsby level.

The result gives Wanderers their first League Two points and they will look to build on the performance when Accrington Stanley visit on Tuesday.

Cameron Dawson remained in goal for the Blues as he continues to deputise for the injured Scott Brown during his seven-day loan.

Gareth Ainsworth was able to recall Nick Freeman to the bench, but was without a host of first XI regulars for the newly promoted Mariners’ visit.

Paul Hurst’s side came into the match on a high after claiming a 2-0 win on against Morecambe on the opening day, but struggled to make an impact on proceedings.

The opening exchanges saw little in the way of goalmouth action and Aaron Pierre’s glancing header, which skipped harmlessly wide, was the best effort of the first 10 minutes.

The chance came from a Joe Jacobson corner and the left-back tested James McKeown with a free kick moments later, but the Town keeper got down well to parry his strike.

Dayle Southwell spent a season with Grimsby in 2014 and looked intent on impressing his former employers as he made a nuisance of himself early on.

While the 22-year-old found himself in dangerous positions on multiple occasions, he lacked the composure to make the most of some half chances.

The entirety of the first half was a non-event in truth and passed by without either side creating a single clear chance.

Things could surely only improve in the second period and both sides came out with renewed attacking endeavour after the interval.

Wycombe should really have taken the lead in the 49th minute when Stephen McGinn’s floated through ball found Garry Thompson.

The veteran forward controlled well before shifting the ball onto his right foot on the edge of the box. He could only lift a placed shot over the bar though to hand the Mariners a reprieve.

However, Wycombe were ahead in spectacular fashion in the 55th minute after an incisive run from Jacobson drew a free kick 20 yards from goal.

The Welshman is Wanderers’ regular free-kick taker, but yielded responsibility to Jombati and the Portuguese stepped up to clip a sublime effort into the top left corner.

The strike was a near carbon copy of the right-back’s effort at Fratton Park last season and he is developing a reputation as a dead ball specialist.

Jombati’s breakthrough was just what the game needed and Grimsby now had to come out in search of an equaliser.

They almost had one just after the hour as a flick on at the near post took the Wycombe defence out of the equation and gave Josh Gowling a free header from six yards.

The defender’s effort was well placed but Dawson did superbly to spring to his left and palm the ball to safety.

The visitors had certainly upped their intensity and a clever pass put Tom Bolarinwa through on goal with 20 minutes to play.

His powerful drive had the beating of Dawson this time but flew wide of the Wycombe stopper’s left hand upright.

The Blues were living dangerously and a period of prolonged pressure saw Town draw level in the 80th minute.

The goal came as Wanderers failed to clear their lines from a corner and Boyce found space some eight yards from goal.

He tuned smartly and struck a weak left footed effort across goal, which eluded Dawson and creeped into the very bottom corner.

It was just reward for a spell of much improved pressure form the Mariners and they finished the game stronger than their hosts.

Nonetheless, Thompson had an excellent chance to win the game five minutes from time as he bore down on goal.

He looked to lift the ball over the onrushing McKeown, but the Grimsby keeper got a telling touch on the shot to divert it wide. It looked to be Wanderers’ final opportunity but they pushed forward to create one last telling chance in the 90th minute.

A cross into the box from the left was superbly met by Adebayo Akinfenwa and his header cannoned back off both posts.

The loose ball sat up invitingly for Stewart and the centre-back gleefully smashed home from a yard out to seal a dramatic win.
