Gareth Ainsworth believes Wycombe Wanderers can use the confidence gained from a last minute win over Grimsby Town as a springboard.

Anthony Stewart smashed home from point blank range after Adebayo Akinfenwa had hit both posts to seal the 2-1 victory in the dying stages at Adams Park.

The result gave Wanderers their first points of the campaign and Ainsworth feels his side will take great momentum from the win.

“This doesn’t happen to us. We haven’t had a last gasp winner, like against Exeter a couple of years ago, in the league [for a while],” he said.

“We had chances and their keeper made a couple of good saves and we will be building on this.

“The game was pretty 50/50 second half and could have gone either way. To come out of this with a win is fantastic.”

Wanderers took the lead through Sido Jombati’s superb free kick in the 55th minute before Andrew Boyce levelled for Town.

The winner came after Akinfenwa had flicked a towering header against both posts to mark an impressive cameo with a telling contribution.

“I said when I signed Akinfenwa there would be a plan b and I think plan b worked today with Thommo’s long throw,” Ainsworth said of the burly forward “I don’t know how he has hit both posts without it going in and that seemed to be slow motion for everyone.

“Anthony is there to pounce from about an inch out and they are the best kind of goals.”

Wanderers often dropped off after conceding last season and Ainsworth was delighted with his side’s spirit, which helped them find a winner.

“That is another growing strength for us. Sometimes we have been in front, teams have clawed us back and we have crumbled a little bit,” he said.

“It is almost like a lack of belief that we can go and win it. We have shown today that we can go and win no matter what position we are in and I am really pleased.”
