High Wycombe-born weightlifter Sonny Webster has described his maiden Olympic appearance at Rio 2016 as the most amazing experience of his life.

The 22-year-old lifted 148kg in the snatch and 185kg in the clean and jerk to record an overall score of 333kg in the men’s 94kg competition.

While his performance was only enough to secure a sixth place group stage finish, Webster was keen to focus on what has been a positive Games for him.

“That was the most amazing experience of my life being up there on that platform. You only get six minutes so I wanted to make sure I looked around and took it all in,” he said.

“There was a great crowd and I was so pleased to record that clean and jerk and get the score on the board. I didn’t quite get the lifts I wanted but the experience has been incredible.”

Staying at the Olympic village has given Webster the chance to meet some of Britain’s top Olympians.

It was an opportunity which he relished and one he says only added to the enjoyment he has taken from his stay in Rio.

“The Games have been amazing. There are so many of my heroes around and to not only have a picture with, but to chat to guys like Andy Murray and Justin Rose has been brilliant,” he explained.

“You’d think they’d be different because of what they’ve achieved but they’re just like any normal guys.

“I’m rooming with the gymnastics boys and went to their final the other night. What they do is incredible.”

Webster’s display was notable for an unusual choice of headwear as he opted to wear a cap while competing.

It has been a quirk of Webster’s for last two years and the youngster believes it may have handed him an obscure record.

He said: “I’ve been wearing the hat for a couple of years now. I wear it backwards as if the bar touches it it’s a not lift.

“If I’ve broken one record it’s being the first weightlifter to compete at an Olympics with a hat on.”

The overall competition was won by Iran’s Sohrab Moradi ahead of Vadzim Straltsou (Belarus) in silver and Lithuania’s Aurimas Didzbalis in third.
