Alex Danson’s dreams of becoming an Olympic champion are alive and well after she scored twice in Team GB’s hockey semi-final at Rio 2016.

The Marlow resident opened the scoring in the 3-0 win six minutes into the second period as GB came out on top of a keenly contested match.

Danny Kerry’s side were forced to withstand heavy pressure as the Black Sticks pushed for a leveller before Helen Richardson-Walsh calmed their nerves with a late penalty.

After a cagey first quarter Danson broke the deadlock in typical fashion as she followed in a blocked penalty corner to bundle home.

The 31-year-old was instrumental in securing GB’s decisive second as her clever pass found Richardson-Walsh who was unceremoniously taken out by the New Zealand keeper.

Her effort from the spot had enough power to deceive the Kiwi stopper and all but end the game as a contest.

Moments later Lily Owsley earned Britain another spot kick which Danson calmly dispatched for her fifth goal of the Games.

GB won bronze in in London 2012 and are now guaranteed at least a silver medal in Brazil.

They face the Netherlands in the final on Friday after the world number ones beat Germany in a penalty shootout earlier in the day.

The gold medal match, which Team GB's women have reached for the first time in their history, kicks off at 9pm BST.
