HIGH WYCOMBE'S Tyrrell Hatton stepped into the big time this weekend after clinching a sparkling victory at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews.

The 24-year-old, from Marlow, finished on 23 under par to win his maiden title on the European Tour, four shots ahead of South African Richard Sterne and England's Ross Fisher.

Hatton carded a six-under par score of 66 on Sunday having already equalled a course record on the Old Course with a sensational 62 the day before as he swept to victory.

“It feels amazing,” Hatton said. “I've wanted this moment since I was a six-year-old boy, it's a dream come true and to do it here at the Home of Golf is fantastic.

“It's been a fantastic week, I had my girlfriend Emily with me and my management team, and to come away with a trophy just makes it even more special.

“I was pretty nervous going out there, but I'm really happy with how I dealt with that, and my caddie, Chris Rice, was a big influence. He just told me to stay patient.”

Playing with maturity that belied his 24 years, Hatton looked in control and was faultless throughout the final day in calm conditions, sinking seven birdies.

His only bogey on Sunday came on the the tricky 17th hole but, by then, he was home and dry and none of the chasing pack were able to apply pressure.
