MARLOW golfer Tyrrell Hatton came so close to winning the European Tour's final event of the season, finishing runner up at the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Estates in Dubai.

Hatton finished one shot behind eventual winner, England's Matthew Fitzpatrick, with a total of -16 after an epic day's golf in the desert.

The 25-year-old had a great chance to win the tournament going up the par 5 18th but ended up putting his tee shot into the water and had to make do with bogey.

Hatton had produced a moment of genius at the previous hole when he made par with an outrageous bunker shot which he holed.

His finish for second ensured he finished fourth on the Race to Dubai leaderboard, with Sweden's Henrik Stenson being crowned the European Tour's leading golfer for the second time.

Hatton took to social media to express his disappointment at losing by a solitary stroke but was magnanimous in defeat.

He tweeted: "Tough finish but these things happen. All you can ever do is try your best. Big congrats to Matthew Fitzpatrick for the win."

It has been a huge breakthrough season for the Harleyford Golf Club professional. He won his first European Tour title last month with a win at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland last month.

Hatton has also climbed to 33rd in the world rankings, ensuring he will likely make his Masters debut next April at the famed Augusta National.
