GARETH AINSWORTH’S Wycombe Wanderers picked up another superb win on the road with Sido Jombati’s late winner beating Newport County 1-0 on Tuesday evening.

Jombati, who replaced the injured Michael Harriman in the starting line-up, struck a fantastic free kick off the underside of the crossbar from 22 yards out with just two minutes remaining at Rodney Parade after Scott Kashket was fouled.

The victory extended Wycombe’s run to four games unbeaten in the league and this result followed just three days after the Chairboys won at Cambridge United, their first away league win since February.

Newport had openings of their own and their best fell to Rhys Healey after 36 minutes as he danced his way into the Wycombe box but his daisycutter struck the post with goalkeeper Jamal Blackman left flat-footed.

Wycombe’s best chance prior to Jombati’s winner fell to Matt Bloomfield after eight minutes when he was put through by Paris Cowan-Hall’s clever flick-on but home custodian Joe Day saved well at his near post.

The game at a freezing Rodney Parade was given the green light to go ahead following a pitch inspection after torrential rain had fallen in south Wales over the past 24 hours.

Newport went into the game unbeaten in seven games in all competitions and they started the quicker as an early shot from Josh Sheehan was comfortably saved by Jamal Blackman.

The away side grew into the contest as Bloomfield’s early chance went begging and Cowan-Hall was a threat to the hosts with his pace and creativity.

After 12 minutes, Wycombe were awarded the first corner of the game. Joe Jacobson’s corner came back to him and he cut in, unleashing a left foot strike that had Day scrambling at his near post but the ball went wide of the target.

Wanderers were content to try and hit the Welsh side on the break, with the middle of their box being swamped with bodies ensuring there was to be no way through for Graham Westley’s men.

Newport had a great chance to open the scoring on 19 minutes when Healey was played in but Jombati made a superb block to deny the frontman.

The game petered out a bit towards the half hour mark with it becoming a bit of a scrappy affair as neither side could get a real foothold in the match.

However, that drab period of play was lit up briefly by Healey as he tricked his way into the box and his low shot scraped the woodwork.

A controversial moment occurred on the half-time whistle when Marcus Bean fouled Sheehan. The combative midfielder had already been booked but referee Busby decided his misdemeanour was not worthy of an early bath.

With that infringement fresh in Ainsworth’s mind, the second half started with Sam Wood replacing the ex-QPR midfielder.

It proved to be a tepid start to the second half with no real pattern to proceedings as both sides struggled to break through.

The game sparked into life on 54 minutes when Sean Rigg’s long range effort was parried away by Blackman.

Wycombe hadn’t produced a lot of note in the second half and Akinfenwa and Kashket replaced Paul Hayes and Cowan-Hall respectively to give the away side some impetus on a difficult pitch.

With 25 minutes to go, the game was at its scrappiest with neither side able to create many chances or string any passes together.

Fouls were also being given away freely by both teams which meant absolutely no flow to the match whatsoever.

County upped the tempo on 72 minutes when substitute Jennison Myrie Williams raced into the box and claimed to be bundled over by Anthony Stewart. The Rodney Parade natives hollered for a penalty but the referee decided it wasn’t a foul.

The home side started to exert some pressure after that penalty shout with crosses being well defended by the Wycombe defence.

Then the decisive moment of the match came on 88 minutes when Jombati curled home via a combination of woodwork and Day to send the 127 Wycombe faithful into raptures.

After that, Newport didn’t really threaten and Bloomfield had a chance to double the lead before the end but blazed over.

On Saturday, the Chairboys entertain Hartlepool at Adams Park as they hope to transmit there excellent week away into a happy homecoming (kick off 3pm).
