ALEX HALES made just nine runs in the opening One Day International against India in Pune yesterday, as England lost by three wickets.

The former Chesham Grammar School pupil, who made an England record 171 against Pakistan at Trent Bridge last year, was run out as England made 350/7 from the 50 overs, with Joe Root top scoring with 78.

After reducing India to 66/4, captain Virat Kohil made a sensational 122 and Kedar Jadhav 120, as the home side claimed an unlikely victory.

The next one day international takes place on Thursday in Cuttack, which England have to win to force a decider in Kolkata on Sunday, before the start of three Twenty20 internationals next week, in which Hales will be a key figure.
