Gareth Ainsworth was overcome with emotion after seeing his Wycombe Wanderers side almost pull off one of the great FA Cup shocks of recent times against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Chairboys boss saw his side go 2-0 up against Spurs but they suffered an agonising defeat as Heung-Min Son scored a heartbreaking winner in the 97th minute to seal a 4-3 win for the Premier League giants.

In what was one of the most memorable games of the season, skipper Paul Hayes scored a first-half brace, including a magnificent volley to hand the League Two side a remarkable cushion at the break.

Tottenham forced their way back to level the scores through Son and substitute Vincent Janssen, who scored a 64th minute penalty.

Incredibly, Wanderers regained the lead through Garry Thompson's terrific header before Dele Alli and Son broke Wycombe hearts.

Ainsworth was full of praise for his team's sparkling display despite the despair of a cruel Spurs winner.

He said: "They have done me proud, they have done themselves proud and they have done the whole town proud.

"I was gutted at the end but the overriding emotion now is what we have achieved and how far we have come as a club.

"If we keep playing like that then we will be winning a lot more than we lose."

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino had to bring on Alli and midfield partner Moussa Dembele in a bid to try and arrest the idea of an upset and Ainsworth added: "It is a real compliment to us to see them being bought on.

"It is a compliment being here and an honour to be alongside Mauricio on the touchline and to be on the same level as him is awesome for me."

After the game, Ainsworth and Pochettino shared a warm embrace on the touchline and the Wycombe gaffer explained what his opposite number said to him.

He added: "Mauricio said to me 'that's football and you were unlucky today, be proud of your boys'."

"He doesn't have to tell me to proud. I am immensely proud and he is right, that is football. It can be like that but what a brilliant game of  and for Wycombe Wanderers to come here and do that is fantastic.

"I am not down at all, I am positive and these guys will never get me down."
