A BRACE from Luke O’Nien gave a huge boost to Wycombe Wanderers’ play off hopes as they saw off league leaders Doncaster Rovers 2-1.

On a gloriously sunny day at Adams Park, the Chairboys came out on top of a tight game, and are now just one point off the play off spots with two games to play.

Two first-half goals from O’Nien were enough to see off Darren Ferguson’s side, and give Wycombe their first win at home since February and means they have never lost to Doncaster.

Boss Gareth Ainsworth made one change to his starting line up from the victory at Barnet, with skipper Matt Bloomfield returning for the benched Paul Hayes.

After the game began quite scrappily, the Chairboys went 1-0 up after nine minutes.

Joe Jacobson hurled in a long throw, which was headed on to the bar by Adebayo Akinfenwa, before Luke O’Nien nodded home from close range.

It was exactly the start Wycombe needed, and buoyed both the fans and the players.

However, just four minutes later, the Yorkshire side drew level. The tricky Alfie May raced to the byline, and his cross took a wicked deflection off Sido Jombati and the ball looped into the far corner over the despairing Jamal Blackman.

It stunned the Adams Park faithful, and the league leaders continued to assert their dominance. Ten minutes later, Doncaster winger Tommy Rowe cut inside from the right flank and his fierce drive struck the woodwork after beating Blackman.

Shortly after, and against the run of play, Wycombe went 2-1 up. The impressive Jacobson floated a free kick from his own half into the Doncaster penalty box, and Akinfenwa held of two Doncaster defenders to chest the ball down to O’Nien, who volleyed in his second of the afternoon on the half hour mark.

Nicknamed the Beast, Akinfenwa, who was playing against his former side, was causing real problems for Doncaster, who were unable to cope with his sheer physical presence all afternoon.

The game then became much feistier and despite a few half chances for both sides, and after only having two shots on target, Wycombe went into the half time break 2-1 up.

The second half picked up pretty much where the first left off. Both sides had a succession of corners and half chances, but none forced either keeper into a meaningful save.

But, on the hour mark, Wycombe fans and boss Ainsworth were furious with the referee after two quick-fire controversial decisions.

The first saw the referee wave appeals away after Kashket was body checked by Mathieu Baudry as he chased down a long ball.

Minutes after, Kashket was brought down by Andy Butler with just the keeper to beat 20 yards out. Ainsworth and the fans were adamant it was a red card for the Doncaster defender, but just a yellow card was brandished, with the resulting free kick coming to nothing.

Doncaster really upped up their game pressing for an equaliser, and Blackman did well to keep out a deflected effort from Rowe.

The away side then had a succession of corners, but Wycombe did well to keep them at bay and were restricting them to hopeful balls into the box.

Dominic Gape, brought on for the injured Sam Saunders, nearly made it 3-1 for Wycombe in the dying minutes.

He latched on to a loose ball and his vicious effort from the edge of the area struck the bar and rebounded to safety.

The Chairboys then managed to survive a late onslaught from Doncaster and rode out 2-1 winners.
