Ben Smith continues to climb the ladder of the boxing world after a points win over Syrian fighter Youssef Al Hamidi at the Copper Box Arena in London on Saturday evening.

The 20-year-old from High Wycombe kept up his 100 percent record by winning his fifth fight out of five against his experienced opponent.

Smith was delighted with how the bout went last weekend and said his game plan went to perfection in his four-round match against Al Hamidi.

He said: “It all went to plan. I expected him to come out and he just went into survival mode. It is tough to fight against someone like him who’s plan is to just hang on.

“I gave him an uppercut in the first round and he wobbled and after that it was hard to get near him as he kept moving away.

“He threw two punches at me in the third round but didn’t connect. I am delighted I managed to get through though and I felt really good.”

Despite not fighting for eight months, Smith added that he felt sharp and fresh as soon as he stepped into the ring. He commented: “Right from the word go, my timing was point and I was firing.

“Moving up to London has helped me so much and added so much to my career. The training camp before Saturday’s fight was unreal and now we look forward to stepping up in class.”

The likelihood for Smith is a fight on Billie Jo Saunders’ undercard on July 8, to be held once again at the Copper Box Arena, although the 20-year-old has yet to confirm if this is to go ahead.

The star attraction on Saturday’s billing was the Gervonta Davis v Liam Walsh fight, which Davis won easily against the highly-rated Brit.

Davis is the prodigy of the legendary Floyd Mayweather and Smith said how starstruck he was at meeting his idol before the evening kicked off.

He explained: “Gervonta was behind me in the queue as I was picking up my pass and he asked me if this was where we were meant to be.

“I was in awe of him as he is someone I look up to and he is absolutely class. He is a real superstar and to see what he did to Walsh, who is a great fighter himself, was incredible. He made him look like a novice.”
