WANDERERS boss Paul Lambert returned from holiday yesterday and, within hours of jetting in, he was battling to pull off his biggest transfer coup of the summer.
He spent yesterday afternoon locked in a second round of talks with a former international midfielder, who has played in both the English Premiership and its Scottish equivalent.
Lambert is hoping to tie up the deal before he takes his squad to Holmer Green tomorrow night for the club's first pre-season friendly of the summer where he will blood all eight of his summer signings so far.
The match at Watchet Lane (ko 7.45pm) will give fans their first look at former Scottish Premier League players David McCracken and John Sutton as well as ex-Premiership midfielder Martin Bullock.
New keeper Scott Shearer will also get a chance between the posts while there will be first run-outs for former Bristol City defender Craig Woodman, ex-Gillingham centre half Leon Johnson as well as fellow new boys Derek Duncan (Orient) and Jack Obersteller (Millwall).
Lambert will also use the game, which heralds the start of Holmer's Centenary celebations, to run the rule over former Wales U21 striker Ramon Calliste.
The ex-Liverpool and Manchester United youngster is the cousin of Wanderers' top scorer Jermaine Easter and is also interesting two other League Two clubs.
Calliste will be joined in the squad by fellow triallist Fiston Manuella.
The tough-tackling midfielder has served Aylesbury and Aldershot Town and is now hoping for his big break.
Both triallists are hoping to do enough to impress Lambert and earn themselves a seat on the plane to Germany.
The Blues fly out of Luton Airport on Sunday for a week-long training camp in Dortmund and a game against SC Verl.
