A young footballer from High Wycombe is living his dream, having just received a football scholarship with Campbellsville University in America.

Charlie Winnett has won a County Cup and has also been selected in the school football tour to the USA to take part in the Schwab’s Cup.

Charlie, who attends John Hampden Grammar, could not hide his delight when he spoke to the Bucks Free Press about how he got the scholarship.

He said: “I don’t even know how it came about it was so surreal,

“I applied for a trial for first point agency just because it came up as an advert and I enjoyed playing football and to my surprise I got asked back for an interview.

“I later then got accepted, but my dad did some research into the company so we then tried United Sports, went through the process and about two months ago got offered a place at Campbellsville.

“In terms of my position, I have been playing my whole life in the defensive positions. I started in goal properly but have been playing centre back for fun when I stopped playing for higher standard teams.

“When I started playing centre-back I found that because of my goalkeeping background I could read the game well.

“I still can’t believe it’s happening as I always wanted to study in the States but never expected it to actually happen so it’s just surreal and I can’t wait to get started.”
