Wycombe Wanderers won their first game in four with a crucial 2-0 win against Barnet at The Hive in their League Two encounter.

The game was played in atrocious, freezing conditions in north-west London and after a tight first-half, the Blues showed their class after the break.

Joe Jacobson scored an emphatic penalty on 50 minutes to give the Chairboys the lead after Craig Mackail-Smith was tripped in the box.

Luke O'Nien then doubled Wycombe's advantage on 70 minutes when his brilliant, whipped free kick when straight in with Adebayo Akinfenwa lurking.

Barnet had the first effort on two minutes when Shaquile Coulthirst let fly from 20 yards but his shot went well wide.

Wycombe shaded the opening exchanges but didn’t really create much of note, although Nick Freeman saw his fierce strike from the edge of the box well parried by Craig Ross in the Barnet goal.

It was a very scrappy first 30 minutes with both sides relying mainly on set-pieces as their best attacking options.

Barnet should have gone ahead on 32 minutes when Curtis Weston’s shot was tipped away by Scott Brown.

The ball; then fell to John Akinde, who had the whole goal to aim at but thumped the crossbar from six yards before Wycombe managed to clear.

Graham Westley’s side had another sniff three minutes later when Weston met Coulthirst’s cross on the volley but Brown comfortably held on.

Wanderers had a good opportunity just before the break when Freeman burst down the left and found Matt Bloomfield, who’s header was well held by Ross.

The Chairboys started the second half brightly and got their just rewards when Jacobson slammed home from the spot.

Jacobson had another attempt a couple of minutes when he turned and rifled a shot towards goal but Ross held on safely.

Wycombe were beginning to assert their authority and the dangerous Freeman got clear down the right with a devastating turn of pace and crossed for Bloomfield who headed inches over on 58 minutes.

Tafari Moore was next to have a crack on 62 minutes when he cut in from the right, showing tricky feet but his firm strike sailed into Ross’ midriff.

Wanderers deservedly doubled their advantage with 20 minutes to go thanks to O'Nien's ninth goal of the campaign.

Gareth Ainsworth's side looked different class as the game got into the last 10 minutes and Akinfenwa almost made it three on 85 minutes but his stinging effort was palmed to safety.

The win keeps the Blues firmly in the hunt for a place in the top three ahead of a trip to Crawley on Wednesday.
