Tyrrell Hatton is set to take on one of the toughest tests in golf this week as he tees it up at this year's US Open at the brutal Shinnecock Hills, beginning on Thursday.

Traditionally the year's second major championship, Hatton will be taking to Long Island, New York, on a course regarded as one of the hardest in the world.

A demanding test is awaiting some of the world's best golfers with greens likely to be firm and punishing winds which could damage a player's scorecard.

Last time the US Open was held at Shinnecock Hills in 2004, the eventual winner, Retief Goosen, won with a score of four under par to beat off the challenge of Phil Mickelson.

After a miserable run of three missed cuts in a row, Hatton took to Twitter to exclaim that he wanted to mirror the US Open lay-out at his local club.

He said: "At the airport ready to fly to New York, looking forward to playing in my second US Open.

"Big thank you to @Harleyfordgreen for double cut and rolling the greens the last few days, very helpful for my preparations."

The tournament begins on Thursday and finishes on Sunday.
