Wycombe midfielder Luke O’Nien has declared he can’t wait for the new season to begin as he looks forward to life in League One for the first time.

O’Nien has been one of the Chairboys’ star performers since joining the club three years ago after a stint at Watford.

The 23-year-old was a key cog as the Blues gained promotion last season, and his stellar displays in the engine room brought about a career-best eight goals, including screamers against Colchester, Swindon and Chesterfield.

Now, O’Nien has a chance to face the likes of Sunderland this season and admitted he will be speaking to some of his team-mates who have played at League One level before about the experience.

He said: “It is going to be a good test for us and I am really excited.

“We have always done well against the stronger teams and I am still not sure what to expect as it is new for me as well.

“I will be looking towards the senior players and asking them questions and throughout our pre-season games I am sure we will come across a bit of everything so we will be ready for that first game.

“We only had Blackpool a couple of years ago and I am looking forward to the challenge.”

O’Nien was one of only two players to play the full 90 minutes against Brentford on Tuesday evening and he explained he felt sharp after two decent matches against quality opposition.

He added: “I feel good. The boys are looking good and those two were tough games. Brentford moved the ball very well and they caused us problems which was good and exactly what you need in pre-season.

“You need people asking questions of you and keep testing everything and to get ready for August 4.

“The gaffer told me before the game that I was getting the full 90 and it was nice.

“It is a good marker to see how fit you are and I really enjoyed it and am getting sharper.”
