Wycombe Wanderers began life in League One with a creditable 0-0 draw against Blackpool but it could have been better for Gareth Ainsworth's side.

The Blues had a whole host of chances throughout the game at a balmy Adams Park but a mixture of wasteful finishing and superb goalkeeping by Blackpool custodian earned the Tangerines a point they barely deserved.

Paris Cowan-Hall had the first opportunity for Wanderers after two minutes, when he chased down an excellent ball from Joe Jacobson but his snap-shot was comfortably held by Howard.

However, a minute later, Cowan-Hall had a golden opportunity to give his side the lead when he met Adebayo Akinfenwa’s flick-on but he blazed over from 10 yards.

Wanderers were edging proceedings early on with Akinfenwa, as ever, a dangerous presence.

‘The Beast’ had a sniff on 14 minutes when he met Sam Saunders’ cross but he headed wide under pressure from Ben Heneghan.

Akinfenwa had a decent chance to give the Blues the lead on 19 minutes when he met Jacobson’s free kick with a firm header but he put it just wide of the post.

The 36-year-old striker was proving a real thorn in Blackpool’s side and his fiercely struck effort on 26 minutes forced Howard into a smart block.

The Tangerines had provided zero threat in the opening 30 minutes, such was Wycombe’s dominance on the game.

Once again, the Chairboys wasted another good opening on 35 minutes when Anthony Stewart headed across goal and Randell Williams fired over when well placed.

Blackpool almost scored with their very first effort when Chris Taylor’s free kick rattled the crossbar on 41 minutes with Ryan Allsop beaten.

The Chairboys didn’t let that affect them and Akinfenwa had another sighter on 44 minutes but headed just off target.

Wycombe were striving for a goal before the break and Williams saw his shot blocked after good hold-up play by the excellent Akinfenwa.

Wanderers carried on from where they left off after the break with Akinfenwa thundering a header over from Jacobson’s corner on 50 minutes.

Blackpool were posing more of a threat in the second half and Taylor had a long-range effort which was calmly held by Allsop on 53 minutes.

The Blues were still in the ascendency and Michael Harriman almost grabbed an early contender for goal of the season when he unleashed a rocket from 30 yards on the hour which Howard brilliantly tipped away.

Gareth Ainsworth’s men continued to knock on the door and Matt Bloomfield’s whipped cross found Cowan-Hall who saw his header fly wide on 64 minutes.

Williams was next to have a crack as he met Jacobson’s delicious through ball on 66 minutes but Howard again produced a good stop to deny the Watford loanee.

Gary Bowyer’s side had a rare chance on 74 minutes when Harry Pritchard’s excellent volley was well held by Allsop.

With the clock ticking down, Wanderers continued to huff and puff but Blackpool were just about holding firm.

A flashpoint occured on 89 minutes as Harriman was shown a second yellow in contentious circumstances after he was adjudged to have fouled Nathan Delfouneso.

Wanderers managed to see the game out and overall, got life in League One off to a positive start.
