Wycombe Wanderers suffered a real baptism of fire on the road in League One as they lost away for the first time in eight months with a 3-0 defeat against Doncaster Rovers.

Goals from Mallik Wilks, Joe Wright and John Marquis gave Grant McCann's side all three points against the Chairboys.

After a fairly even opening 55 minutes, Wilks opened the scoring with a thumping effort from 20 yards which went through a crowd of players and beat Ryan Allsop.

Centre-half Wright made it two on 77 minutes when he coolly slotted past Allsop after a wonderful through pass by Tommy Rowe.

Marquis then made it three and sealed the deal for Rovers at the second attempt on 80 minute. After Allsop saved well initially from the striker, Marquis poked home the rebound.

Doncaster Rovers started brightly, putting in some early crosses to try and put the pressure on the Chairboys.

Adebayo Akinfenwa had a golden chance to give the visitors the lead on seven minutes as Joe Jacobson whipped in a delighful free kick but ‘The Beast’ glanced it wide from six yards.

Both teams were trying to play at a high tempo with Doncaster edging proceedings despite that Akinfenwa opportunity.

Wanderers were looking organised and well-drilled and the Blues had a sniff on 26 minutes when Akinfenwa found Sam Saunders on the right wing and his low crossed was well gathered by Marko Marosi.

Doncaster were chipping away and Danny Andrew’s 30-yard effort on 31 minutes whistled just past the post.

A minute later, Andrew cut in on his right and tested Ryan Allsop from 20 yards, who palmed it away well.

Debutant Bryn Morris had a crack on 40 minutes, testing Marosi on 25 yards with a fizzing effort that the Doncaster stopper held onto at the second attempt.

Wycombe were enjoying a good spell at the end of the first half and Randell Williams’ pace was causing the Rovers backline a real headache.

Saunders’ saw his long-range effort deflected wide. From the resulting corner, Matt Bloomfield and Williams had efforts scrambled clear.

Doncaster once again were quick out of the blocks after a break and a Ben Whiteman cross on 49 minutes was just about dealt with by Anthony Stewart.

The Blues, however, looked dangerous on the break and Williams crossed for Bloomfield, who found the delivery just too high for him on 54 minutes.

Unfortunately a minute later, Wilks crashed home to give Doncaster the lead.

The evergreen Saunders almost pulled the Blues level on 63 minutes when he worked space on his left foot and his curling strike went inches wide with Marosi struggling.

Allsop made a fine save from Herbie Kane before the goals from Wright and Marquis sealed an ultimately comfortable victory.

A first loss on the road for Wanderers since December, who now entertain Northampton Town in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening.
