Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth was a happy man after seeing his side go through on penalties to see of Northampton Town in the Carabao Cup first round at Adams Park.

Skipper Adam El-Abd scored the winning spot kick to make it 7-6 on penalties after Yves Ma-Kalambay saved Jordan Turnbull's effort.

In normal time, it was 1-1 with Randell Williams giving the Blues the lead before Sam Hoskins equalised late on.

Ma-Kalambay performed more penalty heroics at 1-0 when he kept out Ash Taylor's effort was 10 minutes to go.

Ainsworth was delighted to go through at this stage after a barren run in this competition in recent season.

He said: "We haven't won a game in this competition for a long time and that was pleasing.

"What is also pleasing is the way we did it. I thought we were the better side and asked a lot of questions of them.

"It is great to win on penalties. It isn't nice to be on the other end. We played some good stuff.

"The front three ran their socks off, we had energy in the midfield and the back four, with Jason McCarthy back in there, was a big plus and Yves did really well tonight."

With Ainsworth making seven changes for the game, most of them performed very well to stake their claim for a starting berth against Bristol Rovers on Saturday.

Ainsworth added: "This game is about squads. Everyone wants to play and the whole squad will be used this season.

"My headache is to pick the right team for the game against Bristol Rovers.

"We asked plenty of questions of Blackpool, not too many against Doncaster but we were back to usual selves here."

Wycombe missed one penalty out of eight with some expertly taken ones but Ainsworth admitted that practising penalties isn't high on their agenda.

He said: "Some of our players do practice them and I am glad our young players notched penalties.

"Yves was excellent there and I am pleased that the boys have come through unscathed."

Scott Kashket scored the all-important fifth penalty, which if he missed would have seen Wanderers go out.

Kashket scored with an audacious chip, which led to Ainsworth having a wry smile and a little headshake on the touchline.

He joked: "I would never have done it but I never had the skill of Scott Kashket.

"Scott is that type of player and he is very flamboyant and he still isn't 100 per cent fit yet and we have a lot of players to come back."
