WANDERERS boss Gary Waddock has told his team – win the next two matches and you’ve got a real chance of staying up.
Blues face relegation rivals Oldham and Exeter on successive Saturdays and Waddock says six points would put them right back in the mix.
He said: “Nothing will be won or lost over the next two matches but if we won them both we’d give ourselves a hell of a chance.”
Blues visit Oldham first to face a Latics side who ended a five-match wait for a win with a 2-0 success over Leyton Orient on Tuesday.
Seven days later they host free-falling Exeter who haven’t scored in open play for four matches and are winless since beating Leeds nine games ago.
Waddock said: “The next two games are big matches. We want six points but that’s not to say we need six.
“Four points from those two games would be a good return. Nobody knows how many points we will need this season, it’s an impossible question to answer and it’s not worth worrying about.”
Blues are seven points adrift of the safety mark having played more games than most of their rivals.
Waddock said: “We don’t know what’s going to happen so what’s the point in worrying about it?
“I believe we can get out of the situation we’re in, the players believe we can and if we can take the worry away then we’ve got a very good chance.
“There are going to be twists and turns. We won’t win all the games and we won’t play well in all of them. It’s about who holds their nerve the best.”
Waddock accused his team of being riddled with nerves as they shared a goalless draw with Carlisle last week and Waddock says they must lose the fear factor.
He said: “We were nervous and uptight and you can’t play like that. We must relax.”
Waddock looks set to make changes tomorrow.
Talisman Gareth Ainsworth is tipped to return after his three-match ban while Matt Phillips may have to content himself with the bench after failing to make the most of his start last week.
Waddock said: “Matt was given an opportunity and didn’t take it. You have to take your opportunities, It’s all about being consistent. If the players and team are playing at a level they stay in there, if they don’t, you have to try and find that consistency from somewhere else.
“If you are mid-table you can possibly go with players over a period of games but in the position we’re in it needs to be instant. It needs to happen straight away.”
