GARY Waddock is lining up a shock swoop to re-sign Brentford’s Alan Bennett on loan – but the centre half won’t be available for tomorrow’s basement battle against Exeter City.
He is serving a one-match suspension following the red card he received for Brentford on his first game back there after the Bees ended his Adams Park loan.
The Londoners called him back and rejected Wanderers’ initial bid to extend his stay until the end of the season because one of their own centre halves was injured and another was waiting to be called away to be with his partner at the birth of their child.
But his Bees return quickly turned sour.
The former Republic of Ireland international was sent off after coming on as a substitute for the Bees in their 3-0 reversal against Brighton on Tuesday and has received a one-match ban.
Brentford’s defensive crisis has now eased and Waddock could now re-sign Bennett until the end of the season.
But he will wait until the former Reading centre half has completed his ban before trying to complete the loan deal.
He said: “I’ve already spoken to Brentford about it. There was a possibility that we might have been able to get him back here for this weekend before he got sent off, but it is still up in the air.
“I will talk to them again next week and hopefully we can get it completed.”
Waddock says the centre half, who helped keep three clean sheets during his month at Wycombe, is a player worth waiting for.
He said: “He did really well for us. We know exactly what we would be getting and I hope we can get him back.”
