HIGH Wycombe’s Matt Wilson retained the Thames Valley Scratch Singles Champion crown for the third year running with victory at The Liberal Club in High Wycombe this weekend.
England international Wilson dropped just two frames and blasted two century breaks in the knockout phase to take the trophy and £200 first prize.
A 4-0 quarter-final win over Langley’s Doug Smith was highlighted by breaks of 72, 53, 42 and 105, and he went on to construct runs of 70, 66 and 105 again in whitewashing Liberal Club team-mate Nick Birney 5-0 in the last four.
The final pitted Wilson against former professional Martin Grainger and it was Matt who edged the opening exchanges, taking a 3-1 lead at the interval thanks to breaks of 50 and 40. Grainger contributed to the scoring with runs of 47 and 39, but Wilson held the advantage throughout and further efforts of 56 and 72 were enough to seal a 6-2 victory.
Wilson also contributed four century breaks in the league stage of the competition, the highest a 121 at the Chalfont Centre.
