BEACONSFIELD CC chairman Steve Lynch says work has already started to ensure this season’s relegation from the Home Counties League is followed immediatly by promotion from the Thames Valley League.

And, says Lynch, that means keeping the current squad together.

He said: “Going down is a huge blow, we’re very disappointed.

“But we’re already making plans to make sure we get promoted next season and that means looking at our player-base.”

However, Lynch does not think the team needs a major overhaul.

He said: “I think this season was more about not getting the best out of the players we’ve got here.

“We were unlucky with a few of the cancelled games and we struggled with availability sometimes, but with the same side I think we could finish in the top two or three of the Home Counties Division Two West next season.

“The previous year we had pretty much the same side and finished fourth and there has been scarcely any change.

“We’re in a lower league next year so there should be nothing to stop us doing well.

“We’ve just got to make sure wee keep the players we’ve got, and that means Shakil Ahmed.”

The former Pakistant Test spinner did say he would have to consider his future if the club got relegated.

Lynch said: “I think he’s undecided. He’s been here a few years and he is happy here, and I don’t think it would even be an issue if we hadn’t got relegated.

“We’ll talk to him.”

Meanwhile, Beaconsfield haven’t got any time to lick their wounds.

Tomorrow they play Burnham in the final of the Bucks Cup at Wilton Park.

Ironically, Burnham are the side replacing Beaconsfield in the Home Counties League.

Lynch said: “The players will be up for it because it’s a cup final.

“But in all honesty it’s not the most important thing. If we could trade relegation from the Home Counties League for a cup final we’d not have the cup final.”
